Can't create SVI on Cisco 2951

Hi

We have a CME router Cisco 2951. We bought another one to act as backup. I've copied most of the config from Primary CME to Backup CME. For some reason I can't create interface VLAN(SVI) on the Backup CME. They have similar iOS and hardware (except ISM module) so not sure what is the diference.

I read that to use switch commands I would need etherswitch module but I don't have it in the Primary CME.

Kind Regards

Michael

Yes that's a pure layer 3 router no layer 2 at all in place or else you would have a vlan output even if nothings configured

disregard that vlan 1 statement its not doing anything and it shouldn't be there , there is no requirement form looking at the config to even try replicate that , im still confused how its even there on primary as it layer 3 router maybe something to do with the ISM but I can confirm its not doing anything and does not require to be on the new backup router

CMEGW-01#show vlan

SVIs are can be created when the device has Layer 2 ports that can be configured to be part of the same VLAN as the SVI. The Cisco 2951 only have Layer 3 ports unless a Switch module is installed.

Could you please add a full 'show run' of your Primary CME Router?

Hi Hector

Thank you for checking the config.

I'm confused as the Primary CME has got ISM with SRE module which was used for Voicemail but we don't need it as backup.

The module shouldn't provide the switch capability for the routers so not sure what is.

Regards

hmmm there's no intervlan routing on that config and no vlans in use at all from what I see its pure layer 3 router no switching in place

and I agree with Hector you need a switching module to do SVIs on router as I have quite a view variations of them throughout our network

Hi Mark

On the primary CME there is

interface Vlan1
 description $ES_LAN$
 no ip address

I can't create one on secondary although it have almost the same iOS and hardware so am I missing something?

Hi

That's not in use no ip address on it , if svi has no ip address its no doing anything at L3

im still trying to figure how that's on a 2951 without an SM as I cant do it on any of mine that are pure L3

Do you have the syntax for this command ----show vlan ?

That will really tell confirm if its l2 at all as examole from one of my 2951s without an SM

It was puzzling for me and I wasn't sure if it's needed but had some issues when connecting backup CME.

Now I rebuild it and it's working fine.

Thank you for your support.
