can't 'see' ws-G5483=

i just purchased 10 of these (from overseas but they are genuine Made in America which match exactly to 3 i've had for years).

none of them will come up (in a 3548) but the 3 i've had come up immediately.

i don't get it

Any messages in the log? If you're not monitoring, those can slip by. I would expect some form of "unrecognized interface type" message if IOS is unhappy.

Also see if inserting them while the switch is powered down (if you can).
