cannot get SDM to start from PC nor router

I have been trying for two days to get SDM 2.5 to work, I have tried various versions of Java, searched Google until my eyes are about to bleed... I get up to the point where the second page loads and says "Loading Cisco SDM . Please wait..." the hourglass spins ad infinitum... I sure would appreciate any help on this, I am trying to get ready for ICND1 and need some practice on this.

Hi,

I highly suspect this is more of a Java issue. Could you try JRE 1.6.0_03?

Make sure pop up blocker is disabled and IP is listed on the allowed sites on your browser (for IE). Sometimes a PC reboot makes it work.

Also note CCP already replaced SDM a couple years back: cisco.com/go/ccp.

John,

The only "Cisco specified" version of Java Oracle's site is 1.4.2_08 for whatever really frustrating reason, they go from 1.4 to 6, not 1.6 but 6 there's a huge gap. Also, CCP does me no good, I am studying for ICND1 and have been for a while, the test that I will take, which is only availabe until September 30th has SDM, not CCP.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/cisco_router_and_security_device_manager/software/release/notes/SDMr25.html#wp36442

Above is the link to the SDM Release notes that I am using as a guide. I have tried XP and W7, I have tried to run from the flash and from the PCs, I have reset the 871W per the Cisco instructions, and it all goes exactly as stated, and still, I get the login or logins depending upon whether I allow the http or https, but after that.... no more, the hourglass (I said spins above, actually just shows the 'sand' running thru it) never finishes. Occasionally, I will see just a quick blink of a screen change in the background around the time that the "Please wait..." screen appears but it is just a blink of an eye, certainly nothing that I can tell what is happening.

I did disable the popup blocker entirely and I have listed the IP in the allowed sites. I also have rebooted several times along the way as I have installed Java, etc.

This is really frustrating, I was studying for CCNA at a local Community College but later learned about ICND1 & 2 and that it is recommended to get the CCNA in two steps. However, despite having taken Network Fundamentals, Routing Protocols and concepts, and Accessing the WAN (through some missteps on the college's part, my cohort had to skip Switching and go from class 2 - routing to class 4 - WAN) I have had no exposure to SDM because it is not covered for CCNA apparently.  I may have to fall back to the original plan and try for the CCNA in one step.

I know this is not a Cisco issue but it is really disappointing to hit a wall where I have no way of learning something that is a strict requirement.

John,

I finally figured out Oracle's goofy version designation... 6u6 = 1.6.something (I'm not at home right now to check the exact version...) but that did the trick. I sure don't undrstand why Oracle chose to depart from the previous designators.

Once I installed that version of Java, and shut off the previous versions with Java Control Panel, it fired right up. I used it w/o https, I will try it with https some time, for now, just very glad to have it working. Thanks for your help and I will post up the exact version of Java and the results of trying https. One more thing, someone said that .NET 2.0 is required as well, I already had that installed so I don't know whether that is a strict requirement or not.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback and I'm glad it's resolved now.

Good luck with CCNA! Appreciate if you could rate any useful post and mark this thread as solved.

I can't believe Cisco still included SDM in exam requirements when they stopped supporting / recommending it a long time ago. The current CCNA exam (which mentions SDM) expires at the end of September and the new exam (200-120 CCNA) does not have SDM in the curriculum).
