Hello Everyone,
We have currently running a Catalyst 3500 series XL, which is max out. Now we need to expand our network, but at the same time we don't want to interrupt our business. What Cisco Switch could we use as a plug and play unit to the existing one. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Best Regards

Hi, you can plug any switch if you have an available port on your 3500. You need to configure that port as a trunk if you have multiple Vlans, VTP, etc. without interrupt your network.

Hello
yes you can - however if you want to to extend multiple vlans then as stated you’ll need to trunk
i doubt you will be connecting this new switch via fibre so this new switch would I guess connect via a 100mb port and as such will be a bottleneck for the new switch regards it traffic unless that is you have multiple spare ports on the 3500 then you could increase this via port aggregation

Hello,
on a side note, keep in mind that the end of sale date for the 3500XL switches was in 2005, which makes these devices a potential liability in a production network. You might want to think about replacing it with e.g. the 2960-X.
