catalyst 3750x 24ps poe10 gb uplink modules

       Hi,

our network is spread over  15 floors and each floor we have 5-6 switches. we are planning to purchase cat3750-x 24 ps poe with C3KX-NM-10G  network modules. Each floor has two up links  to the core  switch  with  single mode fiber and other being the multimode.Suppose if we are purchasing 75 switches  do we have to  purchase 75 C3KX-NM-10 G  modules.? or  can we limit our purchase with 15 C3KX-NM-10G   sothat two uplinks from each floor can be made?  since network modules are optional cost factor is invovled. Or any issue with stacking ? the SFPs will be LR  and LRM MODULES.looking for an answer ?

another question is whether the new usb type console cable comes bundled with  cat350x or shall we have to order separately?

Hi,

First, the console cable comes in the box.

As for your 10gig modules, if the switches are stacked in each floor you can than only buy the module for the 1st switch in the stack and the last switch.  If your switches are not stacked than you need to buy one module per 3750.

Also use LR

SFP-10G-LR for single mode fiber.

Thanks a lot for the reply.Since 10gnetwork module comes  with 4 sfps(one LR AND LRMcan be used for every floor) and if  we use stackwise option  do we need two network  in every floor? Can the two uplinks run from one switch  with one network module ? In fact I didnt understand  the concept of using  two network modules every floor.Can you  kindly elaborate?

if we are not stacking   what type of connector is required to interconnect  the switches?

Hi,

Let me explain this again.

No, not neccessarly, you can just uplink one switch in the stack and that means you only need one network module for that stack. Remember each module comes with 2 10Gig ports.  so, even though you are using one switch, but still 2 ports.

So, let say you have a stack of 5 switches in one floor, you can buy a network module for switch 1 in the stack and switch 5 and uplink 2 ports from the switch 1 and 2 ports from the switch 5 using an Etherchannel. This will give redundancy, so if switch 1 fails, switch 5 will still continue forwarding packets.  This is just for an example, you don't have to use switch 1 and 5, you can use 2 and 3 or 3 and 4 or any combination you want.

Dear Reza,

Thank you very much for your explanations. So I am planning to buy 30 10G  network modules for 75 switches. So every floor will have  two network modules .Even if one netwotk module/switch  fails  redundancy can be  achieved. As you mentioned  from the stack 1st witch will run aLR  uplink and  5 th switch will run a LRM  uplink.

Glad to help.

LR  uplink and  5 th switch will run a LRM  uplink.

Please use LR for all switches, as it will reach up to 10 kilometers.  No need for LRM.  In addition, for troubleshooting purposes, you want to keep all your optics the same.

Alternatively, you can go to your nearest/favorite electronics shop and get the cable.

BTW, if these floor switches are for typical users, you might be able to  save on costs.  For example, 1st you need to determine whether you  really need 10g at all.  It provides nice bragging, but it's still  pricy.  You might find dual gig etherchannel is perfectly adequate.

Another possible option would be one uplink is 10g and the second is gig.

PS:

Not  100% possible, but unsure the suggestion to use just 10g LR optics will  work on your MM cable although the 10g LRM might work on either your MM  and SM.
