Re: Catalyst 3750X crashing on boot "Unexpected exception to CPUvector 200"

I have a couple of Catalyst 3750X switches (WS-C3750X-48T-S) that have recently been decommissioned and I am planning to reuse them for some lab work.

The 1st one I booted up is in a boot loop, however I can boot to ROMMON. The 2nd one boots fine.

I think there is a hardware fault with the 1st one but wanted to check its not actually software or ROMMON variables that are causing the issue. They both had 12.2(55)SE1 IOS on them.

When it boots I see the following on the console

I couldn't find a USB stick that it would recognise from ROMMON so I copied the latest 15.2(4)E10 .bin image via XMODEM @ 115200Kbps to the root of the flash: and manually booted from it. It took a while as it went through the Front-end Microcode updates, however it completed these updates without issues and then rebooted as expected

There was a C3KX-NM-10G installed, however I have removed this and there is no difference in the boot behaviour.

I think if anything its this error message about the USB device that appears with the 1st boot messages on the console as I don't see this on other switches.

There aren't any DIMMs or anything else that might come loose. This has come out of a very clean DC so is almost immaculate inside.

15.2(4)E10 is the current Gold Star release, however it happened with the previous 12.2(55)SE1 image as well so this is either a hardware fault or something low level set in ROMMON or something?

These are EoL devices that I want to reuse in a lab. Warranty etc is not a concern.

I am just trying to resurrect this switch as there is obviously some life in it as it boots to ROMMON OK and I can interact with it. It fails when it boots the IOS image so I am trying to determine if its just a software or ROMMON/Environment variable that's causing the issue.

Just copied the 12.2(55)SE12 Universal image to the flash via ROMMON and set this as the boot string (set BOOT c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE12.bin) then manually rebooted it. 1st boot causes the microcode to get reprogrammed so takes a while and then it reboots. After that though it fails again at the same point and reboots.

I am fairly sure this is a hardware fault, however the one thing that eludes me is this USB Error on boot?

I have an idea what this is: What method are you using to console into the switch? Are you connected to the "original" console port or the micro-USB console port?

I am using the 'original' serial console.

I have just managed to find a Mini-USB and I get the same thing:
