Circuit connection to 2960X

When connecting a circuit to a 2960X switch, does ip routing need to be enabled on that device, in order to forward traffic to the ISP's next hop router? Or, is enabling ip routing on a 2960X switch, a way to do inter-vlan routing on that device...without the use of an external router?

The 2960x series switches are mainly layer-2 and if you want them to route for you, you need to enable "ip routing" for SVI as well as for the next hop.

Reza, thanks for your reply.

So, in the case of a hub and spoke configuration, where the hub is a 2960X switch that is configured to peer with an ISP device, ip routing should be enabled as a result of the IP address assigned to the SVI that will enable peering with the remote device...correct?

Correct. Since the switch natively is layer-2, it will not route to the ISP unless you enable ip routing.

Yes, Reza. That's good info. Thanks.

Just one other quick question, for you... Would a routing protocol be necessary, in this configuration or simply a default route forwarding to the remote peer device?

All you need is just a default route to the IP address of the next hop (the provider).

Reza,

Thanks, much!
