Re: cisco 3400 not routing

Hi,

sh int f0/24 switchportName: Fa0/24

Switchport: Enabled

Administrative Mode: static access

Operational Mode: down

Seems like this is fa0/1 connected to the router? ok so the mac address of the router is learnt on fa0/1 but in intial config this port was shut no?

It should have been learned via f0/24.

can you do sh run int f0/24 and sh run int f0/1 as well as sh int status and sh int f0/1 switchport.

Regards.

Alain.

ok, now that you moved it back

Can you do a sh mac address-table dynamic vlan 1 as  well as sh int f0/24 switchport again just after the ping to 831.

I enabled it on both 831 and 3400

cisco 3400 not routing

ok on both let us redo the debug ip pack detail 101 command with access-list 101 permit icmp any any

at the same time on 3400:

sh ip int br | i Vlan1

sh arp

sh ip route 192.168.4.1

sh ip cef 192.168.4.1

sh adjacency

and on 831:

sh arp

sh ip  cef 192.168.4.24

sh adjacency

What  obvious fact am I missing?  we will get it I'm sure.

cisco 3400 not routing

ok, I forgot the 3400 was configured as layer 2 device so the show ip commands couldn't work but  you didn't do this:

ok on both let us redo the debug ip pack detail 101 command with access-list 101 permit icmp any any

do it on both when pinging from one side then when pinging from other side.

But one question also why use dhcp for the vlan1 interface just put a static one. and on the 831 exclude the router interface as well as the vlan interface with the ip dhcp excluded command.

This will help troubleshooting as you will always get the same ip for int vlan1 and I think it's best to use dhcp only for end hosts.

Alain.

I did have it set as a static IP at first and changed it to DHCP to see if it's even talking with the 831 and just never changed it back.

How would I enable the L3 commands?

cisco 3400 not routing

Hi,

What  we could test is to change port f0/24 on 3400 to routed port with the no switchport interface command then enable routing with the ip routing  global config command and disable int vlan1 with the shutdown  interface command.

Then put an ip to the f0/24 interface in the same range and then try pinging the router  from switch and vice versa.

Tell us if it is working if yes you can  put a static default route pointing to your 831 ethernet interface and you shoud be able to ping outside.

Regards.

Alain.

IP routing is not a command on my switch

I did do everything else and no pings getting thru

Is the switch bad and need to be replaced?

Hi Christopher,

To configure any feature of the router, you must enter configuration mode.

test#config t

Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z.

test(config)#ip routing

routing is not an option there too
