Cisco 3750, 2900, 3900 and 4400 Boot Time

Hello Community,

I am wondering if there is a document that contains a fact about how long it takes Cisco switches and routers to boot up and/or restart.

Particularly, I am interested in the Cisco 3750, 3850, 2900, 3900, 4400 and 6500 series.

 - The question is probably not uniquely defined, for lower modules it depends on how many interfaces there are, and or if there are any special ones. For high end switches you need to take into account the number of modules and testing times (too).

for the 3750 and 3850 switches, they are 48 ports. The 6509s are with 8 line cards.

For 2900. 3900 and 4400 series. Just ethernet modules.

As per my experience 

C3750  - 10-15min

3850 -15min

The 6509s are with 8 line cards - all come online approximatly 20min - 30min.

For 2900. 3900 and 4400 series. 15-20min around.

When talking about "classic" IOS, the platforms and IOS are meant to start accepting pings in about five to seven minutes.
3850 will depend if the IOS is in Install mode or Bundle mode with Bundle mode booting up the longest. Install mode should take about 10 to 12 minutes boot-up time.
For routers, it will depend on what NM/NME are installed but usually five to seven minutes.

In addition to what the others have already noted, bigger software images tend to be slower to boot, as there's more code to decompress and perhaps more data structures to initialize.

Some devices support the warm-reload feature (see: https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/products/collateral/ios-nx-os-software/high-availability/prod_presentation0900aecd8017a1a5.pdf) which can dramatically decrease the time for a reload.

Also some devices, such as the 6500, with redundant sups, can "boot" into the backup sup, rather quickly, if properly configured. (Not on your list, ASR 1Ks also support [with sufficient RAM] software based backup/redundant images. Don't know what other routers support that feature.)
