Cisco Catalyst 9200 T Rommon Mode Boot over USB Fail

Hello Community,

I stacked two Cisco 9200 devices, after that there was an fail. I think its because there is a difference between the versions (my mistake to stack them before they are on same version).

1 Stack Member: 17.03.04b

2 Stack Member: I think 17.1.1

Output from Switch 1:

TESTSWITCH#sh sw
Switch/Stack Mac Address : 20cf.ae6e.1700 - Local Mac Address
Mac persistency wait time: Indefinite
H/W Current
Switch# Role Mac Address Priority Version State
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*1 Active 20cf.ae6e.1700 15 V02 Ready
2 Member 74ad.983b.f200 1 V01 V-Mismatch

Switch 2 is in rommon mode.

I inserted a stick with that I was already upgrading switches of 92XX series succesfully.

Now on switch 2 (not anymore connected to switch 1, without stack cables):

I used the commands:

BOOT=usbflash0:92XX/cat9k_lite_iosxe.17.03.04b.SPA.bin

and

boot usbflash0:92XX/cat9k_lite_iosxe.17.03.04b.SPA.bin

after that the switch is reading the file and there is an issue with following message:

ERROR: failed to boot from usbflash0:92XX/cat9k_lite_iosxe.17.03.04b.SPA.bin (Input/output error)

Resolved: I used the usbflash1, then the switch accepted the .bin file.

But now there is a boot loop:

Initializing Hardware...

System Bootstrap, Version 17.5.1r [FC4], RELEASE SOFTWARE (P)
Compiled Wed 01/06/2021 17:07:29 by rel

Current ROMMON image : Primary

boot: reading file 92XX/cat9k_lite_iosxe.17.03.04b.SPA.bin

- the boot stopps and the switch restarts

....etc etc

Anyone know a solution?

Thank you for an answer,

Best regards

Dag

Hi,

It appears that the switch is not able to read the entire file from the USB. Make sure the IOS you have loaded into the USB is not corrupted. Also, you may want to use a different USB to make sure the hardware is good as well.

Enter the following command into the stack master:

software auto-upgrade enable

Reboot switch 2.

I also ran into this problem recently with a 9300. The stack will not work if they are not on the same software version. I tried to do the approach with software auto-upgrade enable, but that didn't seem to work.

Here is a thread about how to upgrade a switch using a usb stick. That process worked for me, and I was able to use it to get both switches on the same version, after which stacking succeeded:

Solved: 9300 / 9500 IOS Update from USB Drive - Cisco Community

Also, keep in mind that only consoling to the primary stack member allows me to see the entire switch stack. If i console to the secondary stack member, I only see configuration related to that slave switch. I didn't remember this being the case with 2960x series, but maybe I'm wrong.

Have a look at the attachment.
