Cisco Nexus 5548 license

Our network consult has recommended we purchase 2 x Cisco Nexus 5548P to replace an existing Catalyst 3750G stack. Do I need to ask the supplier to quote for licenses as well as the hardware? If so, what are the options?

If we don't buy licenses, can we use the 5548 as a Layer 2 switch only (no Layer 3 capabilities)? IE does it come with a base license built in that you can use?

Thanks,

Richard.

Yes the 5500 series switches are actually layer-2 and unless you add a daughter card to it, it is not a layer-3 device. If you have a requirement for Ethernet only than the 5548P should work.  If you need FC and Ethernet than you need to purchase 5548UP (unified ports) meaning the ports can be used for FC, FCOE and Ethernet.

Thanks Reza. Then we don't need to purchase licenses if we only use Ethernet and Layer-2 functions. (no fiber channel and no extra cards).

Richard.

That is correct.

Here is the data sheet.  Make sure to talk to your sales guy to make sure you get all the parts you need:

Hello, richard.

Reza is correct, you can use the 5548P as a Layer 2 switch even without the daughter card/expansion module. Let me know if you need assistance for a quote or local support. Send me an e-mail (adawa@cisco.com) as well. Kind regards.

Thanks adawa, that's good to know.

Richard.
