Community Vlan Question

Hi All,

I am going to be placing hosts in the same community vlan but hosts are on two different switches. The switches are connected via trunk port.

Community Hosts------Switch 1-------------Switch 2-------Community Hosts

Do I need the trunk ports to be in promiscuous mode in order for community vlan members to see each other across switches, or can I just make sure the primary vlan that the community vlan is under is permitted over the trunk and it will be good to go?

You need to make sure the primary and secondary vlan (s) are allowed on the Trunk.

Your trunk does not need to be a promiscuous port, a standard dot1q port is fine as long as its allowing the primary and secondary vlan (s).

Excellent, thanks for your reply.  One follow up: I would permit the primary and secondary vlan across the trunk port the same way I would permit two primary vlans over a trunk port right?

In other words, primary vlan 100, community seconday vlan under it is 200. On the trunk port I would do "switchport trunk allowed vlan 100,200" right?
