Default-Information-Originate in RIP

Hi,

I am looking at a RIP question from a documentation that I have and it has the follwing :-

Router rip

Network 1.0.0.0

Network 10.0.0.0

default-information originate

distribute-list prefix DEFAULT_OUTBOUND out

!

Ip prefix DEFAULT_OUTBOUND permit 0.0.0.0/0

[1] My question is what is the point of the distribute-list command here ? It is allowing all networks in the prefix-list anyway ? I think that without the distribute-list command, the default-information originate command will do the job right ?

[2] Also as an alternative can we use a floating static route or just static route in place of the

default-information originate command ? It looks like it will also accomplish the same thing.

Is this true ?

Thank you,

Cheers,

1. That prefix list is allowing only default-route to go out in RIP updates.

2. You can use static as well, but then you have to redistribute it into RIP. With default-information originate you can make it a conditional advertisment too. For example, originate Default only when route 1.1.1.0/24 is present in the routing table.

Hope this helps.

Can you use default-information-originate by itself?
