My companyhas recently purchased two older 1605 routers. No manuals and no help. I do not have any cisco router experience and am trying to introduce them into the network. I have terra term installed and have run an rj45 connection from the connector port to a laptop. I am trying to get into the interface so I can enable the router. I know this is supposed to be a plug and play router but How do I access the interface? Settings are for TCP/IP and I do not have an IP address to access the router intergface. Please remember I am a novice. Know the jargon but not the actions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

You need to use the right cable. Cisco routers come with a console cable which is nothing but two RJ45 connectors on either ends but pins 1 through 8 one one side are rolled over 8 through 1 on other end. (exact cross over). You can easily make one of these with a cat5 cable if you have a crimping tool and end connectors. (rj45). To hook your PC to the console of the router, you also need a DB9 adapter such as this (usually comes with the router). A DB9 adapter is nothing but a 9 pin connector (COM port) on one end and RJ45 port on other end.

Use this link for the correct settings for teraterm (or hypertrm) to access the router via console.

A DB9 adapter (with picture) can be found in this link.

If your laptop has no Com port (new laptops have only USB ports) you will need a USB to DB9 adapter for connecting to the console of the router. You can pick this up from a store such as Fry's or Bestbuy.
I use this adapter on my laptop. Costed me around 30$. You might be able to find similar items online for cheaper prices than this.

In order to config your router, you will need to use the console cable. One end of the console cable should connect to the serial port of your laptop, the other end should plug into the Cons port of your router.
Then, run Hyperterminal on your laptop using this config (9600 bps, 8 databits, none parity, 1 stop bits, hardware flow control).
