Difference between "ip default-gateway" and "ip route 0.0.0.0"?

On the Catalyst switches, is it the same to use "ip default-gateway" or "ip route 0.0.0.0" to set a default route?

No a default gateway is only used if you have turned off ip routing on the L3 switch . If you have ip routing turned on you would use the static default route pointing to the next hop address.
