Does Supervisor 32 support WS-X6416-GBIC & WS-X6348-RJ-45?

Hi Sir,

Are the following two Ethernet modules supported in a Catalyst 6509 (non-E version) chassis with Supervisor Engine 32:

WS-X6416-GBIC

WS-X6348-RJ-45

Catalyst 6509 is no longer available for configuration in Cisco Configuration Tool. However when I configured Catalyst 6509-E with Supervisor Engine 32 using Config Tool, the above two modules are not available. So I assume they are not supported on the non-E chassis as well.

Please confirm.

Thank you.

B.Rgds,

Lim TS

From the Sup32 data sheet -

Investment protection-The Supervisor Engine 32 supports all Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series classic modules and Cisco Express Forwarding

256-based modules and is backward-compatible with all Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series and Cisco 7600 Series chassis, allowing deployment of new, advanced services on existing equipment. The Supervisor Engine 32 also supports the Enhanced FlexWAN module and the new shared port adapters (SPA) and SPA interface processors (SIPs). This prolongs the deployment lifetime of interface modules and provides greater return on investment.

The WS-X6416-GBIC is a classic line card - see link

From memory i believe the WS-6348-RJ-45 is also a classic line card although i cannot find a link at present. I know it isn't DFC enabled though and it is not an SFM, 67xx or 68xx module so think it's safe to say it is supported.

From the Sup32 FAQ

Q. Which line cards are supported by Sup32?

A. All classic line cards and all CEF256 line cards (without a Distributed Forwarding Card [DFC]) are supported at FCS.

Q. Which line cards are not supported by Sup32?

A. The following series of line cards are not supported by Sup32: WS-X67XX, WS-X68XX, SFM, and DFC-based cards.

Hi Lim

Both these cards should be supported by the Sup32. The only cards not supported by Sup32 are

SFM (Switch Fabric Module)

DFC enabled line cards

67xx line cards

68xx line cards

I suspect they are not an option in configuration tool because they are EoS/EoL - see attached link.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm aware these two modules are EOS/EOL. How do you know they are supported by Sup32? I can't find the info on cisco.com.

My situation is, I have an existing Cat6509 (non-E) with dual Sup2 and these two modules. Due to budget constraint, management only wants to upgrade the sup to Sup32. I need to be sure if these two Ethernet modules are supported by Sup32. If not, I'd have to purchase new modules.

Can you provide me any supporting link/document?

Thank you.
