Downgrading from Denali 16.3.1 to 3.6.06 on a 3850 put the switch in Switch: mode

I found that I didn't have the correct boot statement and ended up with:

Switch:

After considerable time and research I brought the switch back.

You need to have a workable USB stick with the Switch Image loaded.

These were my steps. I hope this may help someone in the same situation.

Recover from Switch:  mode

1. flash_init
2. set BYPASS_STARTUP_CONFIG 1
3. boot usbflash0:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.06.E.152-2.E6.bin
4. copy startup-config running-config
5. config t
6. no system ignore startupconfig switch all

exit

7. wr mem
8. copy image from usbflash0: to flash:
9. software expand file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.06.E.152-2.E6.bin

!!converts from bundle to install mode

show run | incl boot

should be flash:packages.conf

if not, make sure it is located in flash:

conf t

10. boot system switch all flash:packages.conf

wr mem

 reload
