File and Print Sharing Through Firewall

NES IT

Hi All,

I have a network with multiple VLANs, all being firewalled on an ASA 5520. I want to be able to share drives and printers between subnets, yet even when I place a permit ip any any rule in both firewall policies, it doesnt work. It works fine between the two machines in question when they are on the same subnet, yet when they are on differing subnets, no joy.

Apart from access through the firewall, is there anything else required to make this file and print traffic pass the firewall?

To my mind, it is ports 445, 137, 138, 139 that are required.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

it also doesnt work when I take the FW out of the equation and try to pass the traffic just through a L3 switch.

Not sure what I am missing here...

Do the PCs have default gateways configured?

Is routing configured from any devices that connect up to the ASA?

Did the layer 3 switch have IP routing enabled?

Thanks, Elton
