Finding distances from the SFPs..

Hi y'all,

I am working out on the Cisco ME 3600X and Cisco 3400 series switches platform. I wanted to know, How to find the the distances of the SFPs used in a Cisco 3400 and Cisco ME 3600X switches, that is, is there any command which I could use to verify if the SFP used is covering 10K or 80K distance in a DWDM network?

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hello Sanket,

you can use show inventory to find out the part number of the optics.

Then you can look in the optical matrix tool using the part number to find out the declared max distance.

for DWDM

by using show controller you can see the tx power and the rx power levels.

Hi Giuseppe, 

Thank you for this very useful suggestion. Although, I tried doing the show inventory command and I have the PID and the serial number, and when I check it in the optical matrix tool, it says no results. I use the PID which is for eg. DWDM-SFP-3661. 

Should I try and enter anything else or some other command to verify the distances?

Hello,

looking at the 10G DWDM datasheet

You can notice they use a naming convention with a . after the first two digits.

DWDM-SFP10G-XX.XX

So my suggestion is to look again inserting a dot use the string DWDM-SFP-36.61 to make the search

Hi Giuseppe,

So, as per your suggestion, I tried entering a couple of entries after refering to the data sheet and typed in the exact Product ID in the matrix tool search, with no luck.

I would try some more entries. Attaching some screenshots as to what entries I tried entering. Thank you.

just type ME-3600X and it will show you all the options for SM, MM, etc...

It will also show you the supported distance per module.

Actually, I tried out just typing "DWDM-SFP-XX.XX" and then with the help of filters, I found out the distances specific to the SFP. Your suggestion helped. Thanks so much!!

yes it is enough to type DWDM-SFP- as transceiver id to find them I have just checked.
