How could an IE2000 lose its config without the Express Setup button being pressed?

I have an IE2000 that has been running for some time.  A few days ago, some changes to the architecture occurred up the line from this switch.  After the change, we could not communicate to this IE2000 any longer (it is at the end of the chain).  The switch was replaced and when I powered it up on the bench the switch wanted to go through its initial configuration.  What are the possible causes of the memory being reset/wiped?  It is impossible for the Express Setup button to have been pressed as the switch is inside a flameproof enclosure which cannot be opened with power on.
