For router, just use the copy command to move the IOS into the flash. 

For switch, the copy command to move the IOS into the flash is option 1.  There are two "archive" commands to unpack the TAR files.  

For 3650/3850 there is the "Bundle Mode" and the "Install Mode".  Read Install Versus Bundle Mode.
