How to installed standalone 3850 switch from Bundle to Install mode

Hello,

The software install command is not supported when the switch is running in bundle mode. Use the software expand privileged EXEC command to convert the switch from bundle mode to installed mode.

software expand running to flash:

I just dealt with similar issue where the switch was in Bundle mode:

Switch Ports Model              SW Version        SW Image              Mode

------ ----- -----              ----------        ----------            ----

*    1 56    WS-C3850-48P       03.03.02.SE       cat3k_caa-universalk9 BUNDLE

So I could not use the software install command.

This is what I did to change this and be able to install new firmware:

1. uploaded my image to flash

2. Issued command

software expand file flash:/cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.04.E.152-2.E4.bin

3. after expanding I changed the boot system to the new .conf file:

boot system switch all flash:/cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.04.E.152-2.E4.conf

 4. Removed the old boot system command:

no boot system switch all flash:/packages.conf

5. Reloaded the switch and all is nice and dandy..

Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image Mode
------ ----- ----- ---------- ---------- ----
* 1 56 WS-C3850-48P 03.06.04.E cat3k_caa-universalk9 INSTALL

Deleting the boot variable in the running config was key. Making sure show boot points to packages.conf
