How to merge VLANs?

Hi

We use switches WS-C2960-24TT-L/12.2(50)SE4/C2960-LANBASEK9-M.

We have trunk from non Cisco equipments. We need to merge VLANs. Now we merge VLANs by patch-cords.

Can we merge VLANs by IOS?

Can we merge VLANs on our switches? If not what version of IOS or model of switch we need?

Hi Alexandr,

Do the two VLANs have different subnets? If so, you will not be able to merge them, but instead will have to route between them.

If  they do have identical subnet configuration but have different VLAN  tags when they leave the non-cisco equipment, ensure that on the  switchports of the non-cisco equipment, the VLAN tags are removed, by  putting the respective ports in the equivalent access mode. Connect  these ports to your cisco equipment and on both of those ports configure  them both as 'switchport mode access' and the same VLAN tag (switchport  access vlan ).

Hi Seb,

We have eight VLANs. The VLANs have identical subnet (192.168.168.0/24). We do not want to use routing.

We want to have all hosts in one subnet. Non-cisco equipment does not allow us have "access mode" instead of ''trunk mode" (it is specified at the producer).

If you cannot configure routing, then the only way to achive this is to have one single subnet with the same VLAN tag.

On the non-cisco kit if you can only trunk then all host connected switchports must be set to native? If so, can't you configure the trunk port which is connected to the cisco kit as native too? This would strip the VLAN tag, allowing you to retag as it hits the cisco kits. you would do this by configuring the connected cisco switchports as 'switchport mode access', with the applicable 'switchport access vlan ' statement.

It is not possible to put all hosts in one VLAN by the non-cisco equipment. Foget non-cisco equipment. We have trunk.  How merge(unit) all VLANs from one trunk?

Bridging? ARP-proxy?

Sorry to sound like I'm beating a dead horse, but can you set a common VLAN on all the non-cisco equipment and trunk that VLAN to the cisco switch? It doesn't matter if you are trunking or doing access ports as long as everything is on a common VLAN.

I believe you need a higher-end switch, like a 6500, in order to bridge VLANs in software.

Also, what switch doesn't allow an access port?
