Hello,
I have a Cisco hwic-4esw installed on a Cisco 2811 platform. I have configured a vlan and a vlan interface and put one of the hwic-4esw ports in that vlan. Everithing is working properly for about 4 hours. After that, the vlan stops working and the only way to make it work again is to reboot the router.
Did someone encounter this problem before? How can I debug this problem? What might be the probable cause for this?
Relevant config:
vlan 100
interface vlan 100
ip add 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.252
interface f0/1/1
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 100
Thanks in advance,
Narcis A.

hey
when you say it stops working how ?
is the hwic still showing up , is it there in inventory ?
anything show in the logs when it happens , did you try reseat it
does the show diag still list it as ok
15.1.4M is known as a stable ios for hwic on 2800 kit could be to do with the firmware

Hello Mark,thanks for answering.
By not working I meant it doesn't pass any packets through it. I can not ping the corresponding router, ping that was working before.
It is shown in the inventory. I have tried shut/no shut on both the physical and vlan interfaces. I have tried deleting all config relevant to this and reconfiguring it back, but nothing changed. To make it work again (for a few hours anyways) I have to reload the router.
Both status and protocol are up, spanning tree is forwarding and the show interface command didn't show anything unusual, but confirms that nothing is passing through that interface (both input and output are 0).
I did not try the logs or the show diag. I did not try another IOS version, now it's working on 12.4 (something), unfortunately I don't think I have a 15.1 image available.
And I just remembered that I had the same problem some 4 months ago with a 3825 platform.
I could probably try to replace the hwic-4esw with a hwic-2fe, but this is bugging me for a while and I am very curious why it is behaving so.
Best regards,
Narcis A.

From what I have seen before there are communication issues between these routers firmware and the hwics , I know someone had same issue in another forum and was advised to move to 15.1.4 or higher to fix the compatibility issue and it did work for them , there card just blank stop processing all data
you should have 15.1 here is the link below, if it continues to cause a problem I would test it see if the image fixes it like it did for others , I doubt the card is broke or it would not work at all
https://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=279120799&softwareid=280805680&release=15.1.4M4
This is the current recommended image for a 2811 MD release and safe harbour tested
c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M10.bin
I would check its still in show diag too when it happens as if its disappearing from there and show inventory you may have a faulty mod

Probably the IOS update will solve the problem. Unfortunately, for me, I don't have a valid service contract associated to my Cisco.com profile and I cannot download the image. But I will check with my colleagues when I'll get back to work and if someone does I will try the update and get back with the results.

I don't condone this or promote it you should always use the Cisco website , but if every option fails with your colleagues just paste that full c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M10.bin into Google there are a lot of places you can download it if you chose too

I also don't condone this practice and I know I can find the image elsewhere. The problem is that I cannot really trust other sites with OS images due to security reasons (I am more of a paranoid type). I am sure someone at work must have a valid Cisco service contract.

You can verify the MD5 or SHA512 on the Cisco website by hovering over the image file. Just compare the official Cisco hash against what you obtain.
