hi ,

i have a problem in network ,

i tried to connected two interfaces of my router cisco 7600 with another switch . cisco 2960

but i noted a fl;apping error message  on the other switch (2960g)

*Mar  2 02:48:40.788: %SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host 503d.e5af.9c40 in vlan 1 is flapping between port Gi0/5 and port Gi0/22

as you see above , there is duplication in the mac address.

i tired my interfaces show in my router cisco 7600

Hiho, Hey Pete =)

This is default behavous for the 7600 (I know it's kinda crazy!), there is a tech doc for it;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a00801c9b4e.shtml

You can change the MAC address using mac-address interface command.

Can I ask, are the ports on the 7600 configured as routed ports? I ask because if they are they will all have the same MAC & the 2960 you are connected to only speaks layer 2.

If you change the interfaces back to switch ports;

Interface Gi1/1

switchport

They should then be assigned an individual MAC on a per port basis. However being unfamiliar with your topology this may not be a solotuion for your design goal, in which case I would manually change the MAC so that the layer 2 fabric on the 2960 stays happy =)

Hello,

I am going to say right away that I do not work with 7600 series routers so I hope someone else who is more experienced will join the thread. Still, let us at least try to pull out some diagnostic information.

  • Is the router currently running an empty configuration, or is there already some configuration present? Can you perhaps post the current running-config?
  • Can you post the output of the show inventory command? We will need to know the line card type you are using.

Best regards,

Peter

Did you configure port-channel in the 7600 switch?

When connecting multiple inter-switch links, one interface would be in blocking mode preventing the error you are seeing.

Only when configuring port-channel on a peer switch, you would see this kind of behavior.

The 7600 is built on the same 6500 architecture where the switch would use the same MAC under all interfaces.

Regards,

Hello Edison,

It is so nice to read from you again! Oh, I owe you an e-mail response - sorry for that, I keep it in mind, though!

Only when configuring port-channel on a peer switch, you would see this kind of behavior.

The 7600 is built on the same 6500 architecture where the switch would use the same MAC under all interfaces.

Are you saying here that when you configure a port-channel on 7600, the MAC addresses on physical switchports will be reconfigured? I haven't observed the same behavior on 29xx/35xx series switches. The virtual Port-channel interface will inherit one MAC address from the bundled physical ports but I have never seen the MAC addresses on the individual physical ports to be changed to a single MAC.

Best regards,

Peter

Hi Peter, hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

No, I'm referring to the fact if you configure a port-channel, both ports will be in FWD mode and the peer switch will see the same MAC from the neighbor device. Loop prevention will try to prevent the packets coming from both interfaces hence the message is displayed.

If port-channel isn't configured, one port will be in FWD mode while the second port will be in BLK mode.

Regards,

Edison, I dont think that port-channel is to blame here, If it were in a port channel the error would not be;

Mar  2 02:48:40.788: %SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host 503d.e5af.9c40 in vlan 1 is flapping between port Gi0/5 and port Gi0/22

I would expect it to look more like;

Mar  2 02:48:40.788: %SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host 503d.e5af.9c40 in vlan 1 is flapping between port Po1 and ports Po1

Or am I of the mark here? But as metioned before this is default behaviour for this model.

Sam.

He is seeing the message on the 2900 switch which is not configured as port-channel.

hi all , im really appreciating your help ,

as sam said , we can change  the mac manually  by the command :

mac-address interface command.

im really surprised to know that the mac can be changed by cli command .

plz have a look here

Gateway7600#sh interfaces gigabitEthernet 1/2

GigabitEthernet1/2 is up, line protocol is up (connected)

  Hardware is C6k 1000Mb 802.3, address is 503d.e5af.9c40 (bia 503d.e5af.9c40)

Gateway7600#sh interfaces gigabitEthernet 1/3

GigabitEthernet1/3 is administratively down, line protocol is down (disabled)

  Hardware is C6k 1000Mb 802.3, address is 503d.e5af.9c50 (bia 503d.e5af.9c40)

this is after i changed the mac under the interface command

as u see , look at the last two  digits of the mac address now , but it seems bia is the same  !

==================================================

=>note  that im using the default seettings as a router not as a switch .

=>no portchannel is used .

==================================================

as soon as u talked about 7600 model , i want to ask a question.

1-is there a supervisor  module  can be intergrated with cisco 7600  that can support 10 giga interface ????

2-  currently i have only 1 power supply is connetced with electricity , and there is another power supply not connected to electricity ,now if i want to connect both the two power supplies for redundancy , do i need to do commands on cli ??

and how to verify the stautus of power supplies ???

Please refer to the following link for Supervisor Module with 10Gbps support

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps368/product_data_sheet0900aecd8072579f.html

Please Note: You will need to replace your current Supervisor with this one.

You can't have dissimilar Supervisors in a chassis.

The power default setting will be 'redundant' by default and the verification command is 'show power'
