ILPOWER-3-CONTROLLER_PORT_ERR: Controller port error, Interface Gi1/0/28: Power given, but Power Controller does not report Power Good

Cisco 2960X with IOS version 15.2(7)E3 shows PoE requests on several ports of the switch.

To be clear: Port 8, 11 and 28 show the request.

Port 8 has no device connected.

Port 11 and 28 have client computers connected which were OFF at the time I created below debug log:

I activated 'debug cdp packets' and 'debug cdp ilp' for this.

And I started looking at this because port 2 had an AP connected which was not booting not even powering on through the PoE of the switch.

I upgraded to the mentioned IOS to test if this helped but it is still the same and the former IOS 15.2(4)E7 is used globally on all my 2960x switches without any problem. Upgrading IOS now, but the old IOS served me well for a long time.

Please help me in finding the reason why this happens...

Hello

Does seem to suggest a bug , is that the latest ios for that switch?
Have you tried LLDP instead of CDP?

Not yet tested LLDP, but that's because AP and switch are Cisco and the ports we are talking about don't have PoE device connected at all. But the issue was already there with the old IOS.

So I am thinking the PoE controller hardware has a failure. Also because I know the region the switch is in is known for power outages, so it is harmfull for the hardware... But I don't know a good testing method for the hardware part.

Hello

If cisco devices then cdp is applicable, it is also possible you have just failed poe ports which does happen, Have you tried various portd on the same switch?

So I stopped providing PoE to the ports giving me mentioned errors. And the problem moved to other ports, also not connected to any PoE device.

I connected the AP to several ports already to see if it helped, port 2, 11 and 30.

When the AP was removed from port 30 this port gave the same error too.

But I never saw the port become active.

Also my local IT showed me the PoE light blinking rapidly (Before I stopped the PoE on the ports that were reporting the power issue.)

I am starting to think this is a hardware issue. Which I never expect because it normally is just stable.

Is there any command to test the PoE part of the hardware? I did not yet find it and just want to make sure.

Best regards,

John Bruurmijn
