Input/output rate for a vlan interface

Hi Support Community team,

I have a very basic question related to input/output rate for a vlan interface. As vlan is a logical interface, so I suppose the i/p and o/p rate as stated under the interface refers to the combined i/p and o/p rates under its member interfaces. Is my understanding correct?

Just to make it more clear, I think that for vlan 180 (see below) , its 3 member ports (gi1/1, g1/2 and gi1/3)  had an average input rate of

994000 bits/sec during last 5 min and an average output rate of  997000 bits/sec during last 5 min. So rates under vlan interfaces are just an indication of the traffic flowing across its member ports. Is it correct?

Router#sh int Vlan180

..................

  5 minute input rate 994000 bits/sec, 454 packets/sec

  5 minute output rate 997000 bits/sec, 420 packets/sec

  .................

Router#show vlan brief

VLAN Name                             Status    Ports

---- -------------------------------- --------- -------------------------------

180    default                          active    Gi1/1, Gi1/2, Gi1/3

thanx,

Kashish

Hi Kashish ,

Yes you are correct...

If you have 'N' number of ports in a particular Vlan ,total input and output rate of 'N' number of interfaces  must be equal to input and output rate of that particular vlan.

I believe input/output rate under a vlan interface is the layer 3 traffic. So for vlan 40 interface, input/output will denote traffic going to/coming from other vlans.
