If I was to buy a normal broadband router at home, If I have say 3 pc's, can they all access the internet. I guess that these kind of routers use PAT which just automatically translates any lan ip to the wan ip and port, Am I correct in thinking this ?

thanks

Carl

Most of these routers can do PAT and static NAT if you wanted to host a web server, etc. on your LAN. You are correct when you say PAT would be used to translate your private IP addresses to a single public address.

Hope this helps.

do most of them do it automatically, I mean the home branded style ones ?

Yes. The default is usually to DHCP the WAN address, hand out addresses throught DHCP on the LAN, and PAT the local addresses using the WAN address.
