If you want the "right" steps, then follow Sebju's links above.

If you want how we've done ours:

1.  Copy the IOS from the TFTP to the active blade supervisor card:  copy tftp:///IOS.bin sup-bootflash:

2.  Copy the IOS from the TFTP to the secondary blade supervisor card:  copy tftp:///IOS.bin slavesup-bootflash:

3.  Go to enable mode and change the bootstring/boot variable.

NOTE:  In this step, what we've done is specify that the chassis boot the NEW IOS and also specify that the chassis boot the old or existing IOS in case the first one fails.

conf t

NO boot system flash sup-bootdisk:OLD_IOS.bin

boot system flash sup-bootdisk:NEW_IOS.bin

boot system flash sup-bootdisk:OLD_IOS.bin

end

copy run start

reboot

Hi Shahul,

Since 12.2 (33) SXI1, they started supporting ISSU (InService Software Upgrade) which reduces the downtime on the end devices connected to the VSS Boxes in a multihomed.Have a look at the below link for any questions:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/iosswrel/ps6537/ps6550/prod_qas0900aecd8044c333.pdf

Hope to help. Please rate if this is useful.

Hi Venkata Ramaraju

Please I need simple steps.

Thanks and Regards,

Shahul Hameed

Hi Shahul,

1) For upgrading the VSS you can go with Fast Software Upgrade. This process requires downtime corresponding to the RPR switchover time. Here is the reference link. Also as requested you will find it easy.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/vss.html#wp1169328

2) Apart from this 12.2(33)SXI supports enhanced fast software upgrade (eFSU) of the VSS using SSO.

Reference link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/issu_efsu.html

You can use any of the above option based on preferences.

Thanks And Regards

Hi,

When you issue sh module, there are 4 sections:

1-card type

2-mac address

3-sub-module

4-online diag status

You only posted sections 2 and 3

can you post all 4?

Hello Leo,

i have to upgrade cisco 6509 vss.

Do i have to reboot both node together? If no, what happens if one node comes up with a different version than the other one?

Thanks

Marco

Whether you the process I've posted above or ISSU or FSU/eFSU, both Supervisor cards will need to be rebooted and they will disruptive.

If one of the Supervisor is NOT rebooted then the Supervisor card that has reboot will go into ROMmon.

in VSS if we have single SUP. Do we have to reload one chassis at a time or both chassis has to reload?

If one at a time then Active SUP chassis has to reload first or standby.
