IOS Upgrade on Cisco 3650-48PD Switch Stack

Hello, we have 4 Cisco 3650-48PD switches in a stack and I've been tasked with upgrading the IOS on them over the weekend. What is the best way to go about this on switches in a stack? Do I have to copy the .bin file to each stacked switch or do I only have to upgrade the master? Is there any difference in upgrading IOS XE vs regular IOS?

Thank you and best regards

Hello cminner88,

if you have a stack and want to update it with a .bin file (not a .tar) you have to load the .bin IOS file to each of the stack members.
You can do this for example:
copy tftp://W.X.Y.Z/IOS.bin flash1:
copy tftp://W.X.Y.Z/IOS.bin flash2:
And so on (the number after flash is the number of the stack member). You can check the numbers via: show switch

After that you have to choose the IOS file to boot for all members:
boot system switch all flash:/IOS.bin

Maybe there are also other ways to do it, but I normally take this one.

Best regards,

Kevin

Do you know why it shows Flash:0, Flash:1, Flash:2, Flash:3, and Flash:4 when there are only 4 switches?

Flash1 is from the first switch, Flash2 from the second and so on.

Can you type "show flash0"? When you type only "show flash" you get the output of the master of the stack.

I can only do show flash: or 1-4. Thanks for the info.
