IOS upgrade on Switch 2960S

Good day all - in the process of upgrading the IOS on one of our switches, other then copying the IOS to switch and reloading switch with new IOS as you normally would, any precautionary steps i should take to prevent loss of config and vlan's?

I'm concerned with running config and what i should be cautious about. Reason for upgrade is that we purchased a 10GB GBIC SFP for the switch but it doesn't recognize it - so i'm hoping and assuming this IOS upgrade may fix the issue.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

You are welcome, that switch support 10G.  Your minimal IOS should be 12.2(53)SE1. Is it other switch model WS-C2960-48PST-S?

Hi,

My apologies. So, 2960s does support 10Gig but 2960 does not.

Hi,

Cisco 2960 and 2960s series do not support 10Gig ports.

Hi

The switches 2960S supports 10G with that IOS. My recommendation if you are going to upgrade the IOS always get a backup, also you need to follow each steps, usually during the upgrade process no configuration is removed.

Check the link in order to see if your switch support SFP 10G.

Thanks for the info - strange is that the one 2960S-24P i have recognizes the SFP no problem, only diff is the IOS ver. which is;

System image file is "flash:/c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE7/c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE7.bin"

NLCU-SW6#sh inv

NAME: "TenGigabitEthernet1/0/2", DESCR: "SFP-10GBase-SR"
PID: SFP-10G-SR , VID: V03 , SN: ADD2F8C75066

and the 48P still doesnt recognise and goes into errdisable...i should probably just go ahead and upgrade IOS.

Try to configure speed auto or speed 10000

Current 2960S-24P - yet the 48P goes into errdisable

Base on the serial numbers, I have strong suspicion the two SFP+ are NOT Cisco-branded modules.

Can you please post the complete output to the command "sh idprom interface ten 1/0/1"?

Hi Leo,

I have some Cisco SFP-10G-SR starting with Serial # AVDxxxxxx

>> Marcar como útil o contestado, si la respuesta resolvió la duda, esto ayuda a futuras consultas de otros miembros de la comunidad. <<

I have some Cisco SFP-10G-SR starting with Serial # AVDxxxxxx

"AVx" means Avago/Broadcom, a known Cisco optic transceiver supplier.  "ADx", however, is someone else.

So the SFP goes into errdisable mode as soon as i insert into switch... if i check the details of error it tells me not supported for what ever reason... but yet, same switch works fine.

Sh log shows;

PHY-4-SFP_NOT_SUPPORTED - and in fact this SPF is supported i confirmed and also have it running on same model switch.

thoughts?
