ipservices versus ipbase on 6509-E

Hi all,

Upgrading two 6509-E routers containing sup32's to two new 6509-E routers containing sup2T's. We run a large OSPF network but our core mainly is a switched network and only has about 5 Vlans. Now this could change in the future and there maybe more Vlans on it.

Just after realising our new sup32's shiped with ipbase instead of ipservices. Version is s2t54-IPBASEK9_NPE-M. My question is is this version ok for routing?

Our old current 6509's are version s32p3-ipbasek9-mz.122-18.ZYA3.bin and they do some routing about the same amount these new routers will do. Here is a summary of the routing table:

IP routing table name is Default-IP-Routing-Table(0)

Route Source    Networks    Subnets     Overhead    Memory (bytes)

connected       1           3           424         640

static          0           0           0           0

ospf 1          26          348         27520       59840

  Intra-area: 366 Inter-area: 0 External-1: 0 External-2: 8

  NSSA External-1: 0 NSSA External-2: 0

internal        12                                  14160

Total           39          351         27944       74640

Removing Queue Size 0

Will I need to upgrade the new sup2T's to ipservices or will this version work ok?

Thanks.

Hi

I think u will have limited routing features.

Thanks

Thanks,

If I have to upgrade does anyone recommend a version I should upgrade to? My network will just be doing OSPF routing.

Just not sure on what image to move to. Does anyone know the difference between NPE, FULL ENCRYPT,  ENT ENCRYPT, ADV ENT ENCRYPT?

Or will any of these images suffice?

Hi,

For sup-2T, you would need SXJ or IOS 15.  15 has been pretty good so far.  The image below will give you all the features you need including OSPF, ISIS, BGP, etc.. and also encryption in case you want to use SSH instead of telnet.

s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.150-1.SY2.bin

Thanks Reza Sharifi,

I was looking at image s2t54-adventerprisek9_npe-mz.SPA.150-1.SY3.bin it was released on 26-NOV-2012.

You reckon that will be ok as well? We have two sup2T's in the chassis..Do I need to tftp the image to both? Is this tricky?

Sorry,

Actually s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY.bin is what I'm thinking about?

Thanks, whats the command to copy from a tftp server to sup? And then from one sup to the other?

Hi

it will be assuming u r using supboot flash

copy tftp sup-bootflas:
n from sup to
copy sup-bootflash: slave sup-bootflash something like this didnt remember the exact syntax.u can search on cisco n u will find it

Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPhone App

It seems to be bootdisk. I copied it from one sup to the other with the syntax similar to yours above. i.e slavebootdisk and I can see the new image in both bootdisk and slavebootdisk. But when I reload I see this error:

%PFREDUN-4-BOOTSTRING_INVALID: The bootfile s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY.bin is present on the active supervisor but not on the standby

Now the only command I could put in the config was:

BOOT variable = s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY.bin,1;

And this did appear in the sh boot command output before I reloaded.

However after reload it was back like this:

sh boot

BOOT variable = bootflash:s2t54-ipbasek9_npe-mz.SPA.150-1.SY1.bin,1;

CONFIG_FILE variable =

BOOTLDR variable =

Configuration register is 0x2102

Standby BOOT variable = bootflash:s2t54-ipbasek9_npe-mz.SPA.150-1.SY1.bin,1;

Standby CONFIG_FILE variable =

Standby BOOTLDR variable =

Standby Configuration register is 0x2102

And booting from old image. How do I copy the file to bootflash?

If you have the correct image in the primary sup

try "copy bootdisk:slavebootdisk"

HTH

Thanks Reza Sahrifi,

I have the image in bootdisk and on slavebootdisk but I can't seem to boot the image. On the running config of the switch I can only set the boot variable like this:

BOOT variable = s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY.bin,1;

It doesn't give me the option to go:

BOOT variable = bootdisk

Can you try to set the boot variable command like this on the sup that doesn't boot the correct image and reboot it?

boot system flash bootdisk:s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY.bin,1

and test again?

HTH

Hi Reza,

I get this error after a write mem:

%PFREDUN-4-BOOTSTRING_INVALID: The bootfile s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY.bin is present on the active supervisor but not on the standby

Even though the image is in bootdisk and slavebootdisk. The copy commands worked.

I think the problem is I can only set the switch to boot from flash like below.

boot system flash s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY.bin

I dont have an option to boot from bootdisk: See below:

)#boot system flash ?

  WORD  System image filename

Any ideas?
