Issue while upgrading WS-4510R+E via ISSU

Hi,

I'm trying to upgarde 4510R+E('WS-X45-SUP8-E') via ISSU, while issuing the command (issu loadversion 5 bootflash:cat4500es8-universalk9.SPA.03.06.04.E.152-2.E4.bin
6 slavebootflash:cat4500es8-universalk9.SPA.03.06.04.E.152-2.E4.bin) it's throwing the error as % Active Boot variable is invalid. Please do help me to identify the
root cause for this issue. Here is the IOS image Details & logs for analysis

Hello,

from Configuring the Cisco IOS XE ISSU Process:

Note An ISSU upgrade from any release prior to IOS XE 3.6.0E to 3.6.0E or later is unsupported for IOS XE supervisor engines (SUP7-E, SUP7L-E and SUP8-E).

A permanent “ISSU barrier" exists between pre-IOS XE 3.6.0E and IOS XE 3.6.0 releases:

ISSU is supported between versions on the same side of the barrier but it is not supported between versions on opposite sides.

So in such a case you'll need to perform a manual upgrade. Also have a look at the Release Notes to check if a ROMMON upgrade is required too:

For the Supervisor Engine 8-E to support IOS XE 3.6.0E, the ROMMON version must be upgraded to 15.1(1r)SG4.

Hi Rolf,

Thanks for the clarification.

If i do a manual upgrade to 3.6.0E from 03.03.02 will i be able to do ISSU upgrade to the higher versions.

Aside, I could see the existing ROMMAN version as 15.1(1r)SG5 in this case should i need to change the ROMMAN version.

Hi,

Your ROMMON version is more up to date than what is required (15.1(1r)SG4).

Also, once you upgrade to 3.6.0E you should be able to ISSU to higher versions in the same major release, as usually ISSU doesn't work between major releases.   Also, your Configuration register should be 0x2102.
