LACP Portchannel issues between Cisco and BIGIP

Hi All,

I was hoping some of you could assist me with an Etherchannel issue that I encountered when connecting 2 * 1 GB lacp bundled ports from a Cisco 6513 to an F5 load balancing appliance.

Details of Equipment:

Cisco 6513

Version: sup-bootflash:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-vz.122-33.SXH6.bin

Includes: 48-port 10/100/1000 RJ45 EtherModule   WS-X6148A-GE-TX

BIGIP:

Model: 6800

Version: 10.2.4

Cisco port channel configuration:

interface Port-channel17

switchport

switchport access vlan 246

switchport mode access

Interface port configuration:

channel-protocol lacp

channel-group 17 mode active

BIGIP “trunks” as they are called have been configured as follows:

Interfaces: untagged

Speed: auto speed/

Duplex: auto

Protocol: lacp

LACP Mode: Active

LACP Timout: Long

Link Selection Policy: Auto

Frame Distribution Hash: Source/Destination IP address

Once I activate the port channel on the Cisco and BIGIP, the following etherchannel summary appears:

17     Po17(SU)        LACP      Gi1/48(P)

17     Po17A(SN)       LACP      Gi13/3(w)

The ports on the Cisco end attempt to bundle and for a moment, both have a “P” flag, until one of the ports dropout under Po17A as seen above. I have played with the various modes (on, active & passive) but to no avail. I even changed the port channel to a trunk (on both Cisco and BIGIP), but the ports refuse to bundle. Lastly, I have hardcoded the speed and duplex settings on both ends but again, the port channel does not bundle.

Even more bizarre, we have a datacentre design where all our network devices are configured as hardware HA pairs. Having applied the exact same configuration to our standby 6513 and BIGIP, the port channel interfaces bundle together as soon as the portchannel is activated.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Jamie
