Mix stack for Cisco Catalyst 9300X-24Y with Catalyst 9300-48T

Hello experts, and good day.

 

I have a question regarding the mixed stack of Catalyst 9300 switches. I'm currently implementing four (4) switches:

Catalyst 9300X-24Y (2 units)

Catalyst 9300-48T (2 units)

 

All these four switches are in stack setup. I noticed only that both Catalyst 9300X-24Y units are successfully running, but the other two units (Catalyst 9300-48T) are not.

 

Is this setup valid? Is there a possible workaround to make all switches in a stack work?

Depends on the firmware.  Are they all on the same firmware?

Apparently, both models have different versions. The C9300-48T ( 17.6.1r[FC2]) unit has a slightly higher version than C9300X-24Y (17.5.1r).

 

Recently, we tried to create a stack on these four switches. Two C9300-48T units successfully formed a stack but the other two (C9300X-24Y) failed. I did initiate 'upgrade autoinstall' for both C9300X-24Y as per instruction from the master switch (C9300-48T). It seems working but failed after both C9300X-24Y unit boot-up.

 

The result from the bootup for both C9300X-24Y:

 

Jun 9 03:10:27.612: %PMAN-3-PROCHOLDDOWN: R0/0: The process tamd_proc has been helddown (rc 134)
Mainboard hardware authentication failed. Abort init ...

 

It seems it is a bug even though it is already resolved in version 16.x.x.

 

How do I resolve this?

I will give the info from the working unit (C9300-48T) as I'm not able to extract it from the other (C9300X-24Y). I hope it is sufficient.

Is it possible if it can be resolved by reverting to factory default?

It seems that resetting to factory default does not solve the problem.
Therefore, this is a well-known issue I need to refer to Cisco for RMA.

Restrictions for Switch Stacks

The following are restrictions for your switch stack configuration:

  • Only homogenous stacking is supported, that is, a stack of Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series Switches stack with only Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series Switches as stack members.

    Cisco Catalyst 9300L Series Switches stack with only Cisco Catalyst 9300L Series Switches as stack members.

    C9300-24UB, C9300-24UXB, and C9300-48UB switches can only be stacked with each other.

  • During a switchover, when the standby device syncs with the active device, the following log message is displayed on the console:

    %SM-4-BADEVENT: Event 'standby_phy_link_up' is invalid for 
    the current state 'NO_NEIGHBOR': rep_lsl_rx Gix/x/x -Traceback=

    Ignore this message. It does not have any functional or operational impact.

  • You cannot have a switch stack containing a mix of different license levels.

I know this thread is a bit old, however, I came across this and noticed an error in the last post. The statement "C9300-24UB, C9300-24UXB, and C9300-48UB switches can only be stacked with each other." is not entirely accurate. The restrictions are, based on what I can find and have experienced with the 9300 series switches, if the digits before the dash "-" are exactly the same, then they can be stacked. The C9300-24UB, C9300-24UXB, and C9300-48UB switches are 9300 Series Switches and can be stacked with other 9300 Series Switches but not 9300L or 9300LM. You should be able to see what can be stacked with any given switch by using the "?" mark when acting as if you are provisioning a switch to join a stack, or actually provisioning a switch. When typing "Swtich(config)#switch 2 provision ?", the switch should list the other switches with which it can be stacked. The numbers and letters after the dash are just identifying port density port speeds and port power. The only exception to this that I have found in documentation but have not tried is, 9300 can be stacked with 9300X. I did type the command referenced above on a 9300 Series Switch and it does list all 9300X switches. The below link is where I found this information:

Thanks for your reply. To inform you that both - C9300-48T and C9300X-24Y. are indeed stackable, as shown below,

Due to mix model, the bandwidth is automatically set at 480G,

Need confirmation of stacking (to be absolutely sure):
 
Is a mixed with the mentioned HW types possible?
 
C9300X-48HXN
C9300X-48HXN
C9300X-48HXN
C9300-24UX
 
The following rule applies:
 
Mixed stacking between Catalyst 9300X and Catalyst 9300 models are supported at StackWise-480 speeds.
Mixed stacking between Catalyst 9300 and Catalyst 9300X and Catalyst 9300 higher scale models (C9300-24UB, C9300-24UXB, C9300-48UB) is not supported. You cannot stack fixed uplink models (C9300L SKUs) with modular uplink models (C9300 SKUs) or other Catalyst switches, e.g. Cisco Catalyst 3850 and 3650 Series. Any combination of Catalyst 9300 models can form a stack. Separately, any combination of Catalyst 9300L models can form a stack.
Catalyst 9300 higher scale SKUs (C9300-24UB, C9300-24UXB, C9300-48UB) need to be stacked with other higher scale models.
StackWise cables that are available to configure stacking with Catalyst 9300 Series modular uplink models (C9300X and C9300 SKUs) come in lengths of 0.5m, 1m and 3m.
The optional StackWise-320 kit for Catalyst 9300 Series fixed uplink models (C9300L and 9300LM SKUs) consists of two stack adapters and a stacking cable. The default stacking cable is 0.5 m, but options of 1m and 3m are also available.
Up to 8 Switches can be stacked together using back stacking cables.
All the switches in the stack should run the same IOS and License.
