                   On a Cat 6500,what is the easiest way to identify if an interface is using MMF or SMF?

Easiest way is probably to do a show interface.  Show interface capabilities will also show you the media type.

#show inter gi 6/1

Full-duplex, 1000Mb/s, media type is LH
