Depend on how your setup, is the Dual Switches with vPC or singe nexusm Switch.

Either case.

1. what is the current version

2. what is the version you looking to upgrade,

3. check the upgrade path

4. read the release notes

and follow standard upgrade proceedures as mentioned below guide

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

Hi and thanks for your response.

By Tomorrow, i would know the current version. Its a singe switch with two zones created on it. that is all I know at the moment.

I have been reading on it and it seems that it is a multi-Tier process like the kickstart and the actual IOS.
so, I would appreciate any heads up that could help ease my way upgrading it.

Best Regards

Masood

Once we know the current version and the one you like to upgrade to.

Bare in mind, if you have only 1 Switch, you expect to have service interuption and you need to do this upgraed in maintenance window.

Hello again,

Managed to console and configure basics, Management ports and stuff. Device manager not working which I assume is because of Java.

and there are two Switches. - making it difficult for me as I have not done this before. a new beast for me.

here is show version:

Software
  BIOS:      version 1.0.19
  loader:    version N/A
  kickstart: version 5.2(8b)
  system:    version 5.2(8b)
  BIOS compile time:       02/01/10
  kickstart image file is: bootflash:/m9100-s3ek9-kickstart-mz.5.2.8b.bin
  kickstart compile time:  12/25/2020 12:00:00 [07/03/2013 10:16:59]
  system image file is:    bootflash:/m9100-s3ek9-mz.5.2.8b.bin
  system compile time:     6/5/2013 15:00:00 [07/03/2013 10:48:15]

Hardware
cisco MDS 9148 FC (1 Slot) Chassis ("1/2/4/8 Gbps FC/Supervisor-3")
Motorola, e500v2  with 1036300 kB of memory.
  Processor Board ID JAF1807AAAN

  Device name: UTP-Nexsus9148
  bootflash:    1000944 kB
Kernel uptime is 0 day(s), 1 hour(s), 52 minute(s), 37 second(s)

Last reset
  Reason: Unknown
  System version: 5.2(8b)
  Service:
UTP-Nexsus9148(config)#

can I upgrade to latest (0ne version below latest based on Cisco) or I need to go through steps to upgrade to a higher version?

Any advise on the device manager? when I say go to Cisco, Cisco page give 404 Error.

Best Regards,

Masood

Hello,

so it turned out that there are two switches. servers are already configured for zones A & B but moved here with configurations in tact. I do have the zones and WWN , hostnames and stuff so, I will create two zones and add WWN and hostnames as listed in server configurations and hope they will pick up!? ( I have not done this before).

As for IOS upgrade, do I need to go from ver 5 to ver6 or I can upgrade from 5 to 8? - Reading through documents I could not tell answer to this question.

Please advise,

Best Regards,

Masood

Thanks. this instructions are well done and thank you.

Best Regards,

Masood

Hello,

upgrades went fine. in your instruction, the last command that has both IOS's listed in one command line, I had to reverse and put kickstart file first. you have it IOS then Kickstart and that wont work. once I reversed it, it worked and all are good now. deleted old version. added members and both switches are operational.
