Hi All,

I have some questions on switches in general.

Can I get help on the following modules on the switch.

1.What is a Backplane?

2.Why is a sup card needed?

3.why are MSFC AND PFC cards used?

4.what should I look for when I want to install 2 supcards on 6509 switch?

Thanks in Advance.

Shyam

Shyam,

In summary

Suppervisor EngineManages 6500 switch, modules installed , VLAN management etc.. usually runs CatOS code.

MSFC, MSFC2 Routing engine or router , a doughter card installed in Sup engine. Runs IOS code.

PFC or PFC2 Policy Feature Card - another doughter card Installed in Sup engine,

QoS functionality resides on the PFC and is a requirement for Layer 3 or Layer 4 QoS processing.

6500 Backplain Refers to 6500 Chassis BUS Fabric architecture

Ethernet Modules Ethernet cards installed in 6500 switch slots, 48 10/100/1000 Base-T

To install two sups in a single chassis is to provide L2/L3 redundancy failover, both need to be same model, same sup type , same IOS code for highavailability.
