Hi Guys,

I have a cisco catalyst 3950 g that has the defualt config with only 1 vlan.

We have give the switch IP address 192.168.130.16

All of the servers connected to the switch are in the range 192.168.130.0/24

we can ping the servers are connected to the switch but we cannot ping or telnet the switch itself.

I read that the switch must have a default gateway as wel! is this correct? If the servers and the switch all in the same subnet why should the switch has default gateway?

thanks

If you are trying to access it from a device off the switch's local subnet, then yes it will need a default gateway. Just as the other devices connected to the switch need a default gateway, the switch in this case is in the same category.

Thanks for the reply,

We cannot ping the switch from a server that is connected to the switch. serve has IP address 192.168.130.18

Why cann't we ping the IP of the switch 192.168.130.16 from a server with IP 192.168.130.18!!?

Thanks

Are you using the default VLAN1 and is the VLAN interface up/up in the switch?

Does the switch have an ARP cahce? (show arp).

Can you post the switch config?

Thanks

switch is in default config, and has only one vlan, vlan 1

Beofre we did chang the IP, this switch had IP 10.0.10.17 and gd 10.0.10.1 and we could access it with telnet or from a web browswer. since we hace change the ip to 192.168.130.16 (without an gw) we cannot access the switch.

Hi there

What is the netmask of the VLAN1 SVI?

What does the line vty config on the switch look like? What is the output of sh ip ssh on the switch?

cheers,

Seb.

sorry as I siad I cannot acess the switch with telnet and right now switch is at data center so no chance to run any command.

the net mask of switch is 255.255.255.0 as the servers.

Are the switch IP and the servers in the same VLAN? You should be able to ping servers in the same VLAN. Make sure that the subnet on the switch is also a /24.

i.e.

ip add 192.168.130.16 255.255.255.0

Check the running configuration to see what VLAN the servers are on.

example:

switchport mode access

switchport access vlan 1

Switch IP address example:

interface vlan 1

ip add 192.168.130.16 255.255.255.0

You will want to place the default gateway on the switch anyway.

I thought so as well, I must add the gw anyway coz before changing the ip to 192.168.130.16 we could access the switch with 10.0.10.17 ( and gw 10.0.10.1)

I would just understand why when the servers and switch are in the same subnet and Vlan why one would need gw to access the switch.
