I am wanting to deploy Nexus 7k. however it would be awsome if someone outlined the differences between nexus 7k and 65xx chassis. so far i know the following:
- Nexus does not support VTP in any mode except transparent
- Nexus only supports LACP
- VPC is a portchannel to two different northbound chassis.
- you can install an image on nexus 7k with dual SUP without service interruption.
- i know its a bandwidth truck device (not sure exactly how much backplane ....etc)
can anyone think of anything else? i need to test the device to be in our destribution and then test it for WAN HE device ( i dont think its the best use for it on the WAN- but still i need to test)
Quite a few differences so i am sure others will chime in -
1) Nexus is as you say concentrated for bandwidth ie. 10Gbps connectivity
2) It is not designed for WAN connectivity unless of course your WAN connection is an ethernet connection. 6500 has a greater set of WAN interfaces available.
3) 6500 NAT = yes, Nexus = No
4) 6500 support service modules such as FWSM/ACE/IDS ie. firewalling/load-balancing/intrusion detection. Nexus does not support service modules
5) Nexus 7K supports VDCs ie. a single physical chassis can be split into separate logical switches. 6500 cannot do this.
6) 6500 does support VSS which allows 2 physical switches to be presented as one logical switch so it can support similiar to VPC.
Basically if you are looking for a core switch or aggregation switch for high throughput then the Nexus is what Cisco are pushing more especially in the data centre. The 6500 is recommended when you need additional features especially service modules at the aggregation layer. And the 6500 switch is very good as a collapsed core/distro in a campus environment.
