Not able to ping the VLAN from another location

Hello,

I have a VLAN created on the core switch first and assigned some ports on the Access switches, the ports or not functioning so then i started troubleshooting the issue then i found VLAN is not showing in the access switches so i matched the VTP version of the core with the access switch then it started showing it on Access switches, but the problem is i'm not able to ping the VLAN IP from different location and when i connect something to the port where the VLAN is configured i'm not getting the network. Please help me. Thanks

interface Vlan613
ip address 10.87.185.1 255.255.255.0
no ip redirects
no ip unreachables
no ip proxy-arp
end

How is core switch connected to the access switches?  By Trunk ports?  If so, is VLAN 613 allowed on that Trunk Port?

Also, is the Core switch a Nexus?  If so, you need to have "no shutdown" under that Interface VLAN.

Hello,

Yes the Core switch is connected to access switches through trunk and the core switch is Catalyst switch, following is the sh int trunk status

Please let me know what to do next? Thanks

Looking at the interface status on the access switch I see that all the ports that are assigned to vlan 613 are showing status as not connected. If there are no connected ports in vlan 613 then certainly there will be problems trying to access anything to or from that vlan.

Hello,

What you said is true, but when i connect something to the ports which are on VLAN 613 i'm not able to access the network, so i believe there is some routing issue but not sure what it is. please suggest

You are probably correct that there may be something like a routing issue. But it is impossible to troubleshoot that possible issue when there is a condition that guarantees that it will not work. so connect at least one device and then we can do some troubleshooting. Can you verify for us what is the default gateway for the devices connected to vlan 613 on the access switch?

When you have at least one active device connected on the access switch in vlan 613 would you post the output of these commands on the core switch

show ip route

show arp vlan 613 (or show arp | include 613 if the core switch does not allow specification of vlan in the command)

Boy, from a networking perspective, everything sure looks ok.

Now, if this was a 3850 and NO routing was working, I would make sure that the "ip routing" command was configured on the switch.  That hit me once where the routing table was populated but wasn't routing at all because it was missing this command.

Now, other things to check:

- DHCP server giving out correct addresses?

- Subnet mask matching on host machines?

- DNS resolution working?

- Local firewalls?

- Can you plug into an access port 613 on the core switch and ping gateway?  get access to network?

Hello,

Yes it's a 3850, following is the result for "sh ip route"

USRICSWCO001#sh ip route

D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area

E1 - OSPF external type 1, E2 - OSPF external type 2
i - IS-IS, su - IS-IS summary, L1 - IS-IS level-1, L2 - IS-IS level-2
ia - IS-IS inter area, * - candidate default, U - per-user static route
o - ODR, P - periodic downloaded static route, H - NHRP, l - LISP
+ - replicated route, % - next hop override

I can ping the gateway from access switch also but no clue why it is not working and for other VLANs i can ping from different locations but for only this VLAN i'm not able to ping from another location

Pinging gateway from access switch

USRICSWAC002#ping 10.87.185.1
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 10.87.185.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 3/6/14 ms

It is interesting that you can ping from the access switch. Would you post the output of show ip interface brief from the access switch? Also the output of show ip route from the access switch.

Can you verify whether devices connected to vlan 613 are receiving address assignment from DHCP?

and we are assigning the IPs statically to each device. Thanks

Thanks for the additional information. This indicates that the source address of the ping would have been 10.87.176.37 (the only IP address on the access switch). And the access switch would have forwarded the ping request to its default gateway of 10.87.176.33. And the ping was successful. So you have demonstrated that ping to vlan 613 from a remote subnet was successful. That pretty much says that it is not a routing problem you are dealing with. It is more likely to be an issue with the vlan or with DHCP set up for the vlan (assuming that the vlan is using DHCP).

Is this vlan using DHCP? Where is the DHCP server? How is the server configured for vlan 613?

Can you post the output of ifconfig from a host connected in vlan 613?

Hello Richard,

The VLAN is not using DHCP and we are assigning the to the device statically

IP : 10.87.185.2

Mask: 255.255.255.0

GW: 10.87.185.1

DNS: 10.87.94.142

Thanks

Thank you for clarifying that you are using manual configuration and not DHCP for devices connected on vlan 613. Can you post the output on the core switch to the show arp vlan 613 (or show arp | include 613)
