PoE 1Gig blade in 4510

Hi all Cisco experts,

recently I tried installing a WS-X4648-RJ45V+E 10/100/1000 PoE blade into slot 10 of our WS-C4510R-E chassis and it can back with an alert stating the blade is not supported in this slot.

However the WS-X4248-RJ45V 10/100 PoE blade works perfectly well.

Is there a reason for this?

What are my options here?

Many thanks,

Paul

Hi,

What type of Sup do you have in this switch?

Hi Paul,

What is the Supervisor engine on 4510? Slot 10 is Flex-slot. Below from Cisco docs.

When Catalyst 4000/4500 Supervisor Engine V is used in the Catalyst 4510R chassis, slot 10 (Flex-slot) supports a subset of

line cards: 2-port Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) and Access Gateway Module This is because of the switching capacity of the Catalyst 4000/4500 Supervisor Engine V; not a limitation of Catalyst 4510R chassis. The Catalyst 4500 Series Supervisor Engine V-10GE allows slot 10 to accommodate any and all line cards.

Option- if you havr any other spare slot (apart from Sup slots), you can use it.

Hi Guys,

thanks for the speedy responses. Here's the output of the "show module":

Am I still restricted?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi,

For slots 8-10 : I am afraid so. Per Cisco doc- The Cisco Catalyst 4510R-E supports only classic line cards in slots 8 to 10 with Supervisor Engine 6-E. So, I was wrong in my frist reply in terms of 'option'. You may want to move one of classc line card (1-4) to 10 and try POE module in that. More info about line cards...

Hi again,

and thanks for all your help here it's much appreciated. One last thing, on a similar switch we have 10/100 Poe blades in the 4510 chassis without an issue, are these considered "classic line"?

See below:

Hi Paul,

On a 4510R-E 10 slot chassis, the 1050 W per slot maximum only applies to slots 1
and 2; slots 3, 4,7, 8, 9, and 10 can supply up to 750 W, providing up to 25 ports of 30 W
PoE."

So it is advisable to use POE modules on slot 1 and 2.
