POE Issue with Cisco 3560 Switch

Andrew Schulz

I have 6 Cisco 3560 PoE capable switches that are having issues with maintaining power inline. A show power inline returns:

You can see that on port 46 I have a POE device attached, which in this case is an IP phone. However if I unplug the IP phone and plug a PC into that same port then unplug the pc and put the phone back on that same port the phone will not power on any longer.

Also, it seems that any port that has a PC already on it will not power on the IP phone, I have to find a port that does not have a PC on it to get the phone to power on, then I can connect the PC to the phone and all is good. However, I need to get the other ports with PC on them to work.

Any help or suggestions are welcome.

Hi,

PoE ports are using cdpv2 to discover PoE devices like IP phones  so if you unplug phone then no cdpv2 discovery and then no Power applied as your port is auto mode( default) but what is strange is when you plug phone back directly on port you get no Power anymore.

Remember cdp is every 60 secs did you wait this long?

Have you tried turning off PoE then turning it on back?

Also, it seems that any port that has a PC already on it will not power on the IP phone, I have to find a port that does not have a PC on it to get the phone to power on, then I can connect the PC to the phone and all is good. However, I need to get the other ports with PC on them to work.

what do you mean by that?

Regards.

Alain.

Thanks for the reply cadetalain,

I have not tried turning off POE then back on, but I will give that a try.

Yes I did wait the 60 seconds for cdp but that did not work for ports that were no longer providing power.

Just to clarify, if I use a port that does provide power to the phone and unplug the phone then plug the phone back in, it works just fine. The issue is when a PC is on a port and I try to put a IP phone it, the phone will not power up.

Example, port gi0/1 has a PC already on the port, I then plug a phone into port gi0/1 and it will not power on the phone. gi0/2 does not have a PC on it, I plug the phone into that port and the phone powers on. Now, I unplug the phone from port gi0/2 and put a PC on it then unplug the PC and put the phone back on port gi0/2 the phone will now not power on. Even after 60 sec.

Could you please paste the relevant config from the switch and also " show version".

Cheers,

-as

Does sh cdp nei shows the ip phone when it gets no power anymore?

Can you do debug ilpower port and debug ilpower powerman and post results.

Regards.

Alain.

Okay, so i got it figured out. I originally set power inline auto on all ports at once. I disabled all then set power inline auto on a small block of ports. Once I did that I was able to move the phone from one port to the other without issue. I believe there is something deeper in the switch that locks all other ports when one is PoE when setting all port to auto as a range.

Thanks

Alright, so that didn't fix the issue after all. As soon as I restarted the switch it went back to the original issue.

Here is the sh run:... I'm curious if it could be the spanning-tree mode pvst and spanning-tree extend system-id???

Configuration register is 0xF

can you do sho spannigtree blocked ports. and a sho int

have you tried configuring the port with a macro

do a sho parser macro brief that will tell you the name of the default macros (i think its cisco-phone-desktop)

to apply the macro go to conf t, interface X then macro apply "macro name from previous command"

You can usually add the voice and data vlan number by adding $AVID X $DVID X

TelcoRoom3560a#sh spanning-tree blocked

Name                 Blocked Interfaces List
-------------------- ------------------------------------

Number of blocked ports (segments) in the system : 0

TelcoRoom3560a#sh parser macro brief
    default global   : cisco-global
    default interface: cisco-desktop
    default interface: cisco-phone
    default interface: cisco-switch
    default interface: cisco-router
    default interface: cisco-wireless

I'm somewhat new to this, so can you explain the macro and the $AVID X $DVID X. I'm not sure what that is and what it does.

I did a

Switch# debug ilpower port
Switch# debug ilpower powerman
Switch# debug ilpower event

debug ilpower powerman was the only one that returned anything.

Andrew,

I have found that we may be hit by a software bug:

CSCsc10999

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/Bugtool/home.pl

Here it says that the Catalyst 3560G fails to provide inline power to an IP
phone connected to a port where a non-powered device was connected previously and unplugged from the port.

This bug is fixed from 12.2(25)SEE2 onwards. Please upgrade the switches to a later release or probably a newer relese and that should fix the issues.

HTH, Please rate if it does.

Cheers.

Thanks for the info Amit, however the link you provided goes to an unavailable page on cisco.com. Do you have a working link. I even searched for CSCsc10999 which also turned up a 404
