Hi Experts,

Can any one please suggest any method for  proactive preventive maintenance of Network devices ?

I have some

1. Backup configurations

2. Checking logs daily

3. monitor CPU and memory utilization

4. Checking interface errors

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Is there any other method? What is the ideal threshold for CPU and memory utilization of a CISCO device(switch/router/firewall).  what will do if the utilization  exceeds that threshold?

Please suggest suitable answers.

Thanks

Vipin

First question. Do you have a budget for any software purchases to accomplish any or all of the above?

There are numerous products available to deal with items 1 through 4.

There is no "ideal" threshold, other than a generic less than 50 - 60 percent.

as far as what to do if and when your exceed a pre determined threshold, you should at least have a log entry, and possibly some sort of trap/alert to a Network management station.

Hi

Yes I have Solarwinds Orion NPM. But my doubt is like what should i/we  do if the utilization exceeds 60%?

Thanks

It depends why the CPU has got to that level. If you are monitoring it then you should be able to tell whether it is a sudden spike or whether it has been gradually rising over time.

If it is a spike then you need to troubleshoot ie. was there any new config added, was any new equipment connected to your network, possible virus issues etc..

If it is because of gradual rising then you may need to consider upgrading your equipment.

But these are only general recommendations, firstly you need to have a good history of the CPU levels on your devices.
