Hi, all.
I have noticed a kind of strange behaviour on some of our Cat4510E access switches regarding inline power,
here is a short description of the situation:
All switches have 4200 Watts redundant power supplies, normally running in "redundant mode", most of the modules
are WS-X4648-RJ45V+E, when the 4510 is fully equipped, the last 3 modules are WS-X4548-RJ45V+.
We have a IP telephony solution (Siemens) implemented, the phones are powered with inline power.
Normally a fully equipped 4510 has about 35-60 telephones connected (some have more, some less, but the effect
is the same on all switches), I have noticed that when an additional PoE device is connected it gets "power-deny"
from the switch, even if the available power should be more than sufficiant for additional devices .....
The only solution to get this additional device working over PoE is to switch to "power redundancy-mode combined" .....
Here are some show-commands to show you, as you can see, the switch is running in combined-mode now:
sh power avail
Power Summary Maximum
(in Watts) Used Available
---------------------- ---- ---------
System Power (12V) 1100 2200
Inline Power (-50V) 3076 6200
Backplane Power (3.3V) 40 40
---------------------- ---- ---------
Total 4216 (not to exceed Total Maximum Available = 7600)
Power Measurement Inline Power (-50V)
(in Watts) (+/- 50Watts)
------------------ -------------------
PS1 100
PS2 100
------------------ -------------------
Total 200
This tells me, that 3076 Watts are used by PoE devices at this moment, but when I count the devices, I
get a totally different output:
sh power inline | incl on
Interface Admin Oper Power(Watts) Device Class
From PS To Device

This tells me that 37 devices consume 522 Watts from the power supplies via inline power ......
What is the deal with that ??? Any ideas which number is true ???
Seems like the 3076 Watts are true, because as I told before, no additional device
gets inline power, all additional devices get "power-deny".
Could this be a crazy bug in the IOS image ??

Hi Frank,
Yes this looks like an accounting error when it comes to calculating the inline power utilization. Symptoms match the bug CSCsj47170 but this seems to have been fixed in the IOS you are running.
The "Inline Power Admin" column displays the amount of PoE allocated by the powered devices attached to the module. This value should match the value against Inline Power (-50V) in power summary table.
In our case, sum of the value in "sh power inline | incl on" = total Inline Power Admin = 523 W (which seems reasonable for 37 devices). However I am not sure if 3076W is being incorrectly displayed in the summary or that much power is actually being consumed somewhere.
I would suggest to open a TAC case and so that we can double check if the fix is present in the IOS version running on this switch.

Shashank

Hi, all.
Funny thing happened since yesterday,
The output of "sh power avail" has changed:
sh power avail
Power Summary Maximum

---------------------- ---- ---------
System Power (12V) 1100 2200
Inline Power (-50V) 3411 6200
Backplane Power (3.3V) 40 40
---------------------- ---- ---------
Total 4551 (not to exceed Total Maximum Available = 7600)
"Inline Power Used" has been increased by 350 Watts, but the total PoE device count hasn't changed:

So, this is getting critical, because the only thing I can do now, is to reload
the box ......
This is def. a big fat bug .....

I opened a TAC case, but no news yet .......
Only a few questions:
- Did you change that ....did you do this ....
Seems like poking in the dark ....

Hi, all.
Cisco has now filed a new bug for this:
CSCtn92288
Link BugTool:
All current versions of the Cat 4500 12.2.(54)SG are affected by this bug.
Cisco set this one to "moderate", I would rather disagree to that, because PoE is not a "minor" feature in our network and the only workarounds to this I know is to reload the (production) box(es) .......
Lets see what happens next
