SFP Receive Power Alert

Hello everyone,

two monitoring system the Observium and Solarwinds have displayed the following alerts for two SFPs on the Cisco IOS c6880x Software (c6880x-IPSERVICESK9-M), Version 15.1(2)SY6, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc4).

There are no errors displayed for others SFPs.

Please let me know if you have encountered the similar issue in the past.

I have attached interface transceiver info.

Assuming that it may be caused by a dirty connections, what would be the best way to get it cleaned.

The switch is located in the remote location, therefore, the operation is likely to be completed by non-networking/infrastructure person.

Thank you.

Re: SFP Receive Power Alert

As indicated by the alerts, this shows that the receive power is low. The fact that you are not having issues would indicate that the level is below the alert threshold, but above the failure threshold. There are a number of potential causes:

  • Faulty transceiver at ether end
  • dirty transceiver lens
  • dirty cable end
  • wrong cable
  • over length cable
  • over tight bend radius in cable (minimum bend radius is about 5cm in practice)
  • excessive number of joins in cable
  • excessive moisture in cable (e.g. through a join)

Hope this helps,

Dave
