Smartinstall WS-C2960CX-8PC-L

Hi,

we want to install the WS-C2960CX-8PC-L switches via Smartinstall. Our Vstack Director is a WS-C3750X-24S-S switch.

Our old switches are WS-C2960C-8PC-L and they are installed via Smartinstall at the same  Vstack Director. Now, we need switches with Gigabit ports for the clients.

This is the config for the WS-C2960C-8PC-L switches:

vstack group custom Access product-id
 image tftp://w.x.y.z/c2960c-8PC-L/c2960c405-universalk9-tar.152-1.E.tar
 config tftp://w.x.y.z/access/access.cfg
 match WS-C2960C-8PC-L
!

This is the config for the WS-C2960CX-8PC-L switches:

vstack group custom Access-GB product-id
 image tftp://w.x.y.z/c2960cx-8PC-L/c2960cx-universalk9-tar.152-4.E3.tar
 config tftp://w.x.y.z/access/access-GB.cfg
 match WS-C2960CX-8PC-L
!

at http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/smart_install/configuration/guide/smart_install/supported_devices.html#14749

you can see, the WS-C2960CX-8PC-L is supported since the version 15.2.3E.

The installed software at the WS-C2960CX-8PC-L is c2960cx-universalk9-mz.152-3.E.bin

After boot, i see the following messages from the WS-C2960CX-8PC-L:

Jul  3 09:44:29.614: %PNP-6-HTTP_CONNECTING: PnP Discovery trying to connect to PnP server http://pnpserver.company.intern/pnp/HELLO

This message is interesting:

"The Director does not have a image file or a configuration file configured for this Product-ID"

In the vstack configuration, the product-id is set to: "match WS-C2960CX-8PC-L"

with a "show inventory" i can see the product name of the switch:

Switch>show inventory
NAME: "1", DESCR: "WS-C2960CX-8PC-L"
PID: WS-C2960CX-8PC-L  , VID: V03  , SN: FOCXXXXX5S

The messages after booting are looking like Autoinstall messages and not Smartinstall messages.

Is Smartinstall really supported by the WS-C2960CX-8PC-L switches?

I have tested other software at the switch. With the c2960cx-universalk9-mz.152-4.E2.bin, after boot, i see the following:

What is the IOS version of the VStack Director?

This could be a bug with the 2960CX where it's sending the wrong CDP information to the VStack Director.

This is the IOS version of the Vstack Director:

BOOT path-list      : flash:/c3750e-universalk9-mz.152-1.E/c3750e-universalk9-mz.152-1.E.bin

You also might want to consider upgrading the IOS of the Director.  This particular version is marked as "Deferred" by Cisco.

OK, now it's better.

I have updated the Vstack Director to version 15.2(4)E4. With a WS-C2960CX-8PC-L and the version 15.2.3E it works. The switch is downloading the new config and the new image. I have tested it with the version 15.2.5E2 for the WS-C2960CX-8PC-L. After reboot, all works fine but if i remove all configuration from the switch ( erase nvram ), after the reload i have the following output at the console:

this can only stopped by pressing "return" at the keyboard. After pressing "return" on the keyboard, the next messages at the console is "shutting down Vlan1"

With a deaktivated IP interface at vlan1, Smartinstall can not start!

The next problem is, the new switches will be delivered with the version 15.2(4)E2.

After connection a new switch to the Smart Director, i see the following at the console:

Switch Ports Model                     SW Version            SW Image
------ ----- -----                     ----------            ----------

The only way to manage this switches with Smartinstall is a downgrade to 15.2.3E with a USB stick.
