sonet what osi layer?

Hi Sarah,

Sonet in just a type physical interface just like Ethernet is:

SONET defines interface standards at the physical layer of the

OSI

seven-layer model. The standard defines a hierarchy of interface rates that allow data streams at different rates to be

multiplexed

.  SONET establishes Optical Carrier (OC) levels from 51.8 Mbps (OC-1) to  9.95 Gbps (OC-192). Prior rate standards used by different countries  specified rates that were not compatible for multiplexing. With the  implementation of SONET,

Re: sonet what osi layer?

thanks Reza and Singh

SONET establishes Optical Carrier (OC) levels from 51.8 Mbps (OC-1) to  9.95 Gbps (OC-192).

Does It mean when we speak of sonet, we are talking about the above mentioned data rates over fiber only not copper ?

Or sonet can also use copper to support the above mentioned data rates?

thanks

Re: sonet what osi layer?

SONET/SDH can be used in an ATM or non-ATM environment. Packet Over  SONET/SDH (POS) maps IP datagrams into the SONET frame payload using  Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).In the ATM enviroment, connections to  SONET/SDH lines may be via multi-mode, single-mode or UTP.

please consider the highlighted line above:

does it mean ip packet---> ppp---> Sonet framing ?

thanks
