Stack Manager Version Mismatch with Matching IOS

Hi,

I recently wanted to add a new 3750x-48P-L switch to an existing stack of two switches. I took the new switch, and downgraded it to match the IOS of the existing stack (12.2(53)SE2           C3750E-UNIVERSALK9-M).

I then tried to stack the switches but I got an error in the logs as follows

%STACKMGR-5-MAJOR_VERSION_MISMATCH: Major Version Mismatch (Local 6 - Received 1)

I did a bit of digging and found the stack manager versions don't match. On the existing stack:-

Stack State Machine View

==============================================================

Switch   Master/   Mac Address          Version    Current

Number   Member                          (maj.min)  State

-----------------------------------------------------------

1        Master    442b.03fa.1200          6.46        Ready

2        Member    7081.0528.bf80          6.46        Ready

On the new switch

                 Stack State Machine View

==============================================================

Switch   Master/   Mac Address          Version    Current

Number   Member                          (maj.min)  State

-----------------------------------------------------------

3        Master    7cad.74e5.3c80          1.46        Ready

So even though the IOS matches, the stack manager version is totally out.

So, I tried upgrading all three switches to the latest 12.2 IOS (12.2(58)SE2) and all the switches are on the same version -

Existing stack:-

Switch Ports Model              SW Version            SW Image

------ ----- -----              ----------            ----------

*    1 54    WS-C3750X-48P      12.2(58)SE2           C3750E-IPBASEK9-M

     2 54    WS-C3750X-48P      12.2(58)SE2           C3750E-IPBASEK9-M

New switch:-

Switch Ports Model              SW Version            SW Image

------ ----- -----              ----------            ----------

*    3 54    WS-C3750X-48P      12.2(58)SE2           C3750E-IPBASEK9-M

BUT the stack manager version has not changed! Any ideas? Is there a way to upgrade the stack manager independently to the IOS? Its very hard to find any documentation on it, just that the versions should match if the IOS matches.

I'd really appreciate some assistance.

Thanks a lot for your time.

I believe this could be a cosmetic bug.

I wouldn't try using the IOS version you are running.  CPU bug is still un-resolved.  Try 12.2(55)SE7 instead.

Hi thanks for replying,

The switches refuse to form a stack, so I think its worse than a cosmetic problem. I'm running a later version than 12.2(55) now - I'm running 12.2(58).

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Downgrade them both to 12.2(55)SE7.

Are you sure that will resolve the problem? The issue is we have now performed two maintance windows and changing the code on these devices requires about 20 downtime.

Are you just basing that on likeing that version of code or is there a bug that has crept into the later releases?

Thanks

12.2(55)SE7, in my humble opinion, is one of THE most stable versions of IOS.  Actually it's 12.2(55)SE5, SE6 and SE7.

I would never recommend anyone to use 12.2(58)SE and later, 15.0(1)SE and later, and 15.0(2)SE and SE1.
