Strange issue with workgroup switches

We have a 4510r-E core, been up and running for 2 years. We also utilized about a dozen linksys and cisco 5 port workgroup hubs/switches. Saturday night every one of the hubs/switches stopped working and would not allow traffic through them. I've seen were the 1 occasional switch quit working however never all at the same time. They were all spread out among our property so i know it wasn't a power spike, and several were connected to some 3560's we have in different closests around our property. Brand new hubs do not work either.

Anyone have any insight on what may be blocking these? As far as i can tell there was no changes made, according to access logs no one accessed the switches.

Could you also please tell us on which ports the non-working switches are attached?

Currently they are not on any ports as i had to remove them. I'll hook one up, verify it is

still not working and repost in a few minutes.

I have a 5 port linkys plugged into 2/41 with a computer on it. The computer cannot access anything on the network

Is the link between core and wg-switch supposed to operate in trunking mode?

When used as a port extension, you would probably rather want to extend a single vlan.

Although it does not explain the sudden halting of all ports, I would expect such  a config to run typically in non-trunking mode.

Can you test what happens when you set the switch port in access mode? (switchport mode access)

  Also if the switch is configured as a hardcoded trunk , "switchport mode trunk "  , it can say its trunking when it may not be . One of the gotchas of forcing on trunks.  In order to say trunk all it needs is a physical link and it will say trunk when in fact it may not be working at all .  Check the device on the other end of this if its not working on the config .     Also if you have not pruned off vlans not needed on the trunks (just allowing everything everywhere) then  a single switch or user could indeed effect the rest of the lans .  All it takes is for someone to bridge a couple of ports together  by mistake  and you will be amazed how fast things can go down.  That is a lot of trunks. Any indications in the logg  of what went on ? Are the logs sent to a server where you could look at the that time period ?

Cisco has this annoying little protocol called DTP (Dynamic trunking protocol).

If your work group switch is just a bridge for a single VLAN then DTP will be a problem for you. If you are merely trying to bridge a VLAN and not exactly trunk or tag multiple VLANs to this work group switch then you will need to disable DTP on the Fa2/41 port.

With DTP enabled, the protocol listens for BPDUs. If it receives them it assumes the connection is another switch and that switch wants to trunk.

If you are not trying to forward multiple VLANs over to this switch then configure the Fa2/41 port with the following command.

switchport mode access

switchport nonegotiate

This sets the port to an access port and then turns off DTP.

If you are trying to trunk multiple VLANs then I will need to see the full configurations on both ends.

Fixed the issue, any idea why after 2 years, longer on some other that this all of a sudden happened for every linksys switch we have?
